Hip 4 in the sales ring Photo by Terri Cage |
Horse after horse strolled
through the back ring at Fasig-Tipton’s Newtown Paddocks in Lexington, Kentucky
as a crowd of prospective buyers lined the rail. As a yearling’s time to sell
neared, the young horse would leave the back ring for the alley behind the
sales ring. Once in the sales ring, each yearling would take in the peculiar
sight of the auditorium as buyers placed their bids on the regally bred Thoroughbreds.
For the first time ever, I watched this action happen before me, at the
Fasig-Tipton July Sale.
Of the 17 selections I made (which you can read about in Part One), 14 sold for a total of $1,345,000, averaging $96,071. This average was nearly $7,000 higher than the sale’s average, which increased by 10.45% from last year. Among my selections was the sale topper (hip 51), who sold for $460,000 – $85,000 higher than last year’s sale topper.
